Education:
1977: High school graduation,Schiller-Gynasium, Hameln, Germany.
1977 – 1979: Pre-clinical studies in medicine at Ruhr-Universität, Bochum.
1979 – 1984: Medical school, clinical studies at Medizinische Universität zu Lübeck. Internship in internal medicine, surgery and pediatrics.
May 1984: Graduation from medical school, physician's licence.
1985: Dissertation (doctoral thesis); degree awarded: Doctor of Medicine, rated "summa cum laude". Title: Development and optimisation of luminescence immunoassays on the example of cortisol and gentamicin".
Current Position:
Since 2003 Professor of Medicine, Chief: Division of Clinical Endocrinology, Campus Mitte, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
Former Positions:
June 1984 – April 1990: Resident and fellow in internal medicine at the Dept. of Internal Medicine at the Medizinische Universität zu Lübeck. Clinical work in endocrinology, intensive care medicine, nephrology, organ transplantation / clinical immunology, cardiology and sonography / endoscopy.
May 1986 – April 1988: Post-doctoral fellow of the MINERVA Foundation (Max-Planck Society) at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel (Department of Hormone Research). Research field: generation of monoclonal antibodies to peptide hormones, epitope mapping of the human growth hormone (hGH) molecule, structure-function relationship of the hGH molecule, development of immunoassays for haptens and peptide hormones.
May 1990 – end 2002: Research associate at the Medizinische Klinik, Klinikum Innenstadt, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München. Head of the Neuroendocrine Research Unit.
